Project Content
In many of their countries of origin, migrant women follow certain rituals and routines that are exclusively reserved for their gender group, such as Subhiyye in Lebanon, which is a homosocial morning gathering among women there, or Gama’iya Niswân in Syria, which roughly corresponds to women-only savings and loan groups.
Although it is practiced by women of all backgrounds and in different forms, its most intact forms are circles of housewives and neighborhood communities. Other female communities, friendship groups, etc., have similar yet different "habits" that appear as simple forms of regular gathering and exchange. Upon second gaze, such rituals, habits and routines are far denser than they appear. They are sustained by a set of unspoken rules of time, structure, materiality, and rules - an institution indeed.
The internship is intended to gather insights and data on the question of whether - and if so, how - such women-only activities are also followed by migrant women (in particular from a Muslim background) in Berlin.

Tasks for Interns
The intern learns how to put together a research design that consists of a sample (of interlocutors, focus groups, or else) and a certain geographic scope in which in situ fieldwork is going to take place.
On a methodological level, the student makes themself familiar with methods of ethnographic fieldwork in a culturally, linguistically, and religiously diverse environment.
It is also a goal of the internship to develop skills in typologizing the members of a diverse sample and in structuring a research agenda.

Academic Level
Doctoral students
Requirements
  • Excellent language proficiency in Arabic and English; German is helpful but not a requirement.
  • Experience with ethnographic fieldwork and a good knowledge of gender-specific approaches, methods, and concepts in Area Studies.

Expected Preparation
Reading knowledge of relevant literature on theorizing “gendered spaces”.
